Instead of a monthly newsletter, families will receive an email every Friday afternoon with updates about the school.
Dear Peace Bridge families,
Thank you all who came to the Open House last Tuesday! We will be announcing the winners of the Peace Bridge Passport Scavenger Hunt during morning announcements tomorrow! We’re including some pertinent information and dates below:
- National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (TUESDAY): Orange Shirt Day began on September 30, 2013, as a commemoration event when six-year-old Phyllis Webstad entered the St. Joseph Mission Residential School just outside of Williams Lake, BC. Phyllis was wearing a brand-new orange shirt when arriving at residential school, only to have it taken from her and replaced with the school’s uniform. Phyllis never saw the shirt again. Phyllis’ story became a national movement to recognize an estimated over 150,000 First Nations, Metis and Inuit children’s experiences who attended residential schools from 1831 to 1996.
In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission released a report along with 94 Calls to Action to advance the process of Canadian Reconciliation. Call to Action number 80, specifically calls upon the federal government to establish a statutory holiday, a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour Survivors, their families and communities to ensure that commemoration remains a vital component of the reconciliation process. September 30, 2021, marked the first observance of a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and signifies one step in a long journey of healing and reconciling the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples of Canada.
At Peace Bridge, staff and students engaged in this reconciliation process by exploring the themes of empathy, truth and reconciliation throughout the week leading up to September 30th in their classrooms. To honour this day, all DSBN schools will fly the Survivors’ Flag at half-mast. At 9:30am, Peace Bridge will be having a short ceremony to mark this moment and all of you are welcome to attend. This will be a somber event and if you would like your child to meet you on the front lawn to stand with you and watch the flag raising, please email to let us know and we will have them ready to come outside at that time.
We also encourage all students to wear orange to honour the resiliency and bravery of the Survivors and their families, which should be supported on this pathway to reconciliation for all Canadians.
